The goals of this project are:

1. Raise awareness about how many microplastics are in our local waters and fish

2. Determine if there is a connection to different areas, types of bodies of water, and seasons to the level of microplastics present

Our second years Lila and Riley renewed this project in 2025. Each month, the students collect samples of the Navarre Beach Pier and analyze them under microscopes to determine the concentration of microplastics. The students then share their data as part of the wider Florida Microplastics Awareness ProjectIn addition, to their data collection, the students participate in our pier cleanup dives to directly remove marine debris. They also attend several outreach events throughout the year to share their project and raise awareness within the community.

The team is planning to expand their research and make new connections with microplastics to our local marine environment. They are planning to collect more samples in both the Gulf and Sound and analyze samples from wild caught fish. They continue to improve their procedures, participate in more outreach events, and continue
pier dives to collect marine debris.
