FAQ

What is Aquaculture?

Aquaculture is the raising and harvesting of marine organisms, such as shellfish, fish, or even algae!

What are you raising?

We are currently growing red and black mangroves as well as a variety of local fish species.

Why is this important?

Aquaculture is an industry that has experienced significant growth over the past decades. As the global population has increased, so has our need for food. Raising fish takes less space and energy than other protein sources!

Why is your program student-led?

As with everything at the science station, we strive to give our students opportunities that will help them beyond the classroom. Our aquaculture program provides our students with tangible, hands-on experience in the field and gives them the confidence to pursue this field as a career choice.

Our student-led aquaculture project started in 2021 with a grant provided by the Florida Department of Agriculture.

This opportunity has opened opportunities for our students to become hands on in the construction, cycling, and maintenance of a full Recirculating Aquaculture System.

In 2024, students converted the aquaculture to a brackish water system and are now growing two species of mangroves and a variety of local fish.
